Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept insurance?

In order to ensure that each child receives personalized kidney specialty care tailored to their unique needs and to offer the highest level of attention, Dr. Nilay Donmez is an out-of-network provider. Depending on the specifics of your insurance coverage, you may be eligible for reimbursement for your appointments with us.

How can I afford high-quality medical care for my child?

Due to the current insurance crisis in the country, many specialists are opting out of insurance networks. In other words, you may need to see an out-of-network provider to receive the highest-quality care. However, labs, imaging, medication, and genetic testing are still billed to insurance, which can save you thousands of dollars.

For specialist visits, please call your insurance provider to find out about your out-of-network benefits and maximize your reimbursement rates.

What is Network Gap Exception?

A network gap exception is a tool health insurance companies use to compensate for gaps in their network of contracted healthcare providers. When your health insurer grants you a network gap exception, it allows you to get healthcare from an out-of-network provider while paying the lower in-network cost-sharing fees.

If your wait times to see a pediatric specialist is too long (reasonable wait time is 30 days for a specialist per CMS guidelines), you may contact your insurance provider to request for a gap exception.

Due to national shortage of pediatric specialists, your wait time to see a pediatric nephrologist or pediatric obesity specialist is likely beyond the reasonable period. We recommend educating yourself regarding your benefits and advocating for your child to get the best care, as soon as possible.

Do you offer telemedicine visits?

Yes, indeed, Dr. Nilay Donmez offers the convenience of telemedicine visits for her patients who need pediatric nephrology or childhood obesity care.

Where do I go for labs?

We partner with LabCorp, which has more than 2,000 locations across the country. Another convenient option is LabFly, a laboratory service that provides at-home blood draws by an experienced phlebotomist in the NYC area. If your child needs genetic testing for their condition, the testing kit will be sent to your home for you to swab their cheek. You then drop off the kit, and your specialist will receive the kidney genetics test results.
